Ideas for Managing
Summertime means lots of lovely skirts and shorts with healthy, bare legs and ankles, right?! Welllllll, it depends. Because legs covered with bites are definitely not sexy, it’s best to save the short skirt look for the bug-free times.
If you ever get the opportunity to attend a BBQ in Karamea, you’ll notice that the locals go for a summertime look that keeps legs and ankles covered (and you’ll be wishing you’d done the same!)
Because it’s really hard to look gorgeous when you are doing a SANDFLY Shuffle.
So, now that you have an idea of #hownottodress how do you keep the summertime feel and protect your skin?
Dress for the Part- Social BBQ Kind of Events
For guys, it’s easy, trousers instead of shorts, or if you do shorts, keep your feet covered. For women, go for goddess-like long, flowing cotton trousers, or even super long skirts- still beautiful and summery, but smart too.
Instead of sandals or jandals, because sandflies love feet the most, the most, the most, tuck your feet into a summery clog or for the casual, crocs work pretty well too.
You can also provide your own sandfly attraction by wearing dark trousers and a light coloured top. The sandflies tend to the ground anyway and will hang out around the dark colour, paired with a lovely summery white top, they won’t be hanging around your face and arms.
Dress for the Part – Back Country
The single best thing you can do for managing sandflies & mosquitoes is to dress well for the occasion. For back country days, a light-coloured long sleeve merino top would be our choice for comfort, weather, sun and bug protection. A hat with a good brim provides protection for your face.
Sandflies are more attracted to dark/warm colours and standing next to a person in a black fleece jersey will provide instant relief to you! Sandflies tend congregate lower rather than higher. So if you cover up your feet and ankles and stand up you’ll be less hassled.
Cover up When you Stop
No matter how nice a bug repellent is, it’s much more efficient to keep most of you covered, so you can just pay attention to looking after your face and hands.
What if you do not want to be covered up with long legs and long sleeves? Ok, that’s fair enough. You might just have to keep moving more. Or bring a shirt and something to lay over your legs (like a sarong) so that when you do want to stop to eat or enjoy the view, you can.
Smart is Comfortable- Get SANDFLY Savvy
When you know a few sandfly and mosquito tips & tricks, you’ll be more likely to feel like you are managing the bugs, instead of being driven by them.
