When you're serious about your outdoor time- tramping, fishing or hunting, you'll need some extra tricks for staying comfortable.
There's a big difference between stopping in Hokitika for lunch (no sandflies), and camping out at Milford Sound (many, many sandflies). It is not possible to fight the sandflies. You can endlessly dispatch them,
and there's an endless supply of more to take their place. The most difficult situation to deal with is when you are unable to keep moving. Goodbye Sandfly is made to deal with sandflies.
You may have to apply it several times at the beginning to get enough layering and smell built up to be effective.
If you haven't already, read our How to Dress and Tips and Tricks for an introduction to sandfly country. Also, there are some merino 3/4 fingerless gloves that are really comfortable,
covering your wrists and backs of your hands. Some hats have flaps that hang down around the ears and neck for super sun protection. They also work great with sandflies.
Or you can use a bandana under your hat to keep your neck and sides of face covered.
Try not to cook your meal crouched on the ground at sunset. If possible, avoid working close to the ground. Choose a campsite that has some breeze, or site your cooking area away from trees.
